If certain lights in your home make you cover or close your eyes?  Then you can opt to install a dimmer switch, they can make your home look more versatile by allowing you to dim your lights as per your need, providing a more comfortable environment to live in.

Dimmer switches allow you to vary the lighting intensity by controlling the amount of voltage a fixture receives. Electronic dimmers use a special intelligent device called triac. A triac is a 3 terminal solid state electronic switch that turns power on and off up to 120 times per second. That speed might not be visible to your naked eye.

But you need to be careful because not all lights adapt to such switches. For example if you are about to install dimmer switches on CFL or LEDs then you might be wasting your valuable time and money. So, call or visit our website G3 electric to get a perfect knowledge about dimmer switches or any electrical needs from our technical electricians.

Below we will look upon certain procedures or steps by which you can install an electric dimmer switch. It is very easy and only takes about 30 minutes of your time to complete the task.

Tools and material requirements

      Wire stripper

      Screwdriver

Correct dimmer switch for installation (single or three way dimmers.)

      Voltage detector

  •  Flash light

Before you install

Cut the off power from your breaker box and ensure that no electricity is flowing using a voltage detector.

Do not touch any loose wire

Unscrew or simply click in using your screwdriver from the top and bottom end of your switch plate.

Once the switch plate is wide open remove ¾ inch of casing for reconnection

Go through the instructions provided with your dimmer switch about where the wires should go before hooking up.

(Single pole dimmer switches)

Connect the green ground wire to a green or exposed copper wire coming out from your box and twist the end together.

Connect each dimmer wire (black) to the house wires separately. These could be black, white with black markings, or red in colour depending on your dimmer and tighten the ends together.

(Three way dimmers)

● Remove the wires from the box carefully. If the wires are twisted untangle them first.

Connect the green ground wire to the green or exposed copper wire and twist the ends firmly.

● Connect the black dimmer wire to your common wire removing the sealed tape.

Connect the two remaining wire (traveler wire) separately to the left over wire in the box and twist them securely together.

After all wires are connected, install the switch back to the box, following the cover plate.

     Tighten all the screws
